Grid-tied solar systems are programmed to use the electricity generated from the solar array first. When there is an excess of electricity generated by the solar panels, grid-tie systems will push electricity back into the grid on a large scale. Therefore when you use electricity from the grid again, you will pay less per unit. When the PV solar array is not able to generate electricity due to a lack of sunlight, the Grid-tied inverter/s will utilise the electricity from the grid as a back-up.
